NEW INTERNATIONAL DISTINCTION - JOHN JACKSON MOOT COURT COMPETITION 2021-2022

New International Distinction - John Jackson Moot Court Competition 2021-2022

The Department of International Studies is pleased to announce that the student team of the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which recently participated in the European Round of the John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition, held remotely (28 April-1 May 2022), won the Best Written Submissions Award and the Runner Up Award in the European Round of the competition. Through this success, it qualified for the World Final Round of the John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition, which will be held in person between 28 June-2 July 2022 at the World Trade Organization (WTO) headquarters in Geneva, and will be attended by the 24 best university teams in the world.  The Law School of the University of Athens participates for the umpteenth year in the John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition, and its team consists of undergraduate students Chrysoula Petroulaki, Sara Tzouvani and Irini Hartzi. The team was prepared by the Assistant Professor of Law and Economics, Ms. Erisa Truzou, and Ms. Irina Truzou, and Ms. Irina Truzou. The team was prepared by Professor Anastasios Gourgourini, assisted by participants from previous years who had successfully represented the School of Law of the University of Athens in this competition.

The John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition is organized for the twentieth consecutive year by the European Law Students' Association (ELSA), under the auspices, and with the support, of the World Trade Organization and is a simulation of the judicial resolution of transnational commercial disputes. Each participating group of students has to argue both in writing (with legal pleadings) and orally (with a formal speech) before a panel of experts in international trade law, both on the side of the complaining State (Complainant) and the respondent State (Respondent). This year's case concerns the compatibility of transnational subsidies with the multilateral regulatory framework of the WTO, in light of both the promotion of free trade and the need to implement trade policies in the context of environmental protection.

Our Faculty's team will continue its intensive preparation ahead of its participation in the World Final Round of this year's John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition in June 2022 in Geneva, where it will be invited to compete against the best teams from universities in Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and Oceania. ELSA Athens was a supporter of this effort, which we thank.
