NEW INTERNATIONAL DISTINCTION - ALL-EUROPEAN INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN AND REFUGEE LAW MOOT COURT COMPETITION 2022-2023

New International Distinction - All-European International Humanitarian and Refugee Law Moot Court Competition 2022-2023

Our team participated for the first time in this year's European Virtual Trial Competition in International Humanitarian and Refugee Law and, after a difficult and exciting final round against the University "St. Kliment Ohridski" of Sofia, unanimously won the first place! The team of the Athens Law School and the Department of International Studies consisted of Despina Papadela (undergraduate student), Polyxeni Demopoulou and Spyridon Leonis (postgraduate students in LLM in International and European Law) under the guidance of Dr. Stavros Evdokimos Pantazopoulos. Polyxeni was also awarded the prize of Best Oralist of the Final Round. Our team members demonstrated their excellent legal skills, mastery in role-playing and admirable public speaking skills throughout all stages of this demanding Competition, which they deservedly won.

The All-European International Humanitarian and Refugee Law Moot Court Competition 2022 is based on a Case Study, which is carefully prepared by the organizers (School of Law, University of Ljubljana) in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the UNHCR and examines the current issues concerning international humanitarian and refugee law, drawing on current situations. It is designed to encourage students to study and understand the fundamental concepts of international humanitarian and refugee law by addressing specific legal problems and practicing their legal arguments before experienced judges and committee members.

The 7th edition of the prestigious Pan-European International Humanitarian and Refugee Law Virtual Trial Competition took place in the impressive facilities of the University of Ljubljana from 15 to 18 November 2022. It was organised by the Faculty of Law of the University of Ljubljana (Professor Vasilka Sancin) and supported by the ICRC, UNHCR and the Slovenian Red Cross.

The hospitality and the excellent organization of the Competition are a guarantee for the participation of the team of the Law School of the University of Athens Law School in the next year. Our team is grateful to Professor Vasilka Sancin and Dr. Maruša Veber for organizing such an exciting Competition. Our team would also like to thank the ICRC delegation in Athens for their continuous care and support. Without their indispensable support, our team's participation in the Competition would have been impossible. Our team expresses its deep appreciation to the academic staff of the Department of International Studies of the School of Law of the University of Athens, Greece, who encouraged our participation from the very beginning and continuously, as well as to the administrative staff who helped us significantly throughout our preparations.
