We are delighted to announce that on Thursday 21 May 2026, 17.15-19.00 EEST, dr. Elisa Cavallin will give an online guest lecture with the title "The EU Waste Framework Directive: Core Provisions, Its Role in the Circular Economy Transition, and Broader Systemic Linkages".

The lecture is organised within the framework of the course “Environmental Law & the EU Internal Market”, but we warmly invite and encourage all students of the LL.M. in International & European Law to attend.

This lecture provides an overview of the EU Waste Framework Directive, focusing on its core concepts, principles, and key legal obligations. It examines central elements of EU waste law, such as the definition of waste, the waste hierarchy, and the waste/not-waste dichotomy. The lecture also situates the Directive within the broader framework of the EU circular economy, highlighting its role in (not sufficiently?) promoting resource efficiency and sustainable production and consumption patterns. Finally, the lecture highlights the Directive’s systemic linkages with wider regulatory and policy frameworks, such as product legislation and the right to repair, illustrating its complementary role to broader EU product‑ and sustainability‑related regulatory instruments.

Elisa Cavallin has been a postdoctoral researcher at Ghent University (and affiliated with Hasselt University) since 2024, working on the link between environment and health in international and EU law. She is also the lecturer-in-charge of the course “International Law and Sustainable Development”. Additionally, she is a member of the Legal Working Group and of the Marine Restoration Working Group of the Society for Ecological Restoration, European Chapter. Elisa has a Master’s degree in Law (Padua University), an LL.M. in International and European Law (Ghent University) and a PhD in law (Hasselt University).  Before her PhD, Elisa worked at the European Parliament as a policy adviser on environment, health, animal welfare, and energy issues.  Her fields of work and interest include the environment and biodiversity, energy, agriculture, waste and products, and animal welfare and human health.
